In 2019, KC Mothers in Charge will celebrate its 5th anniversary as an organization! To honor this milestone, Dr. Dorothy Johnson-Speight, Ph.D., MHS, LPC, the Founder and National Executive Director of Mothers in Charge, Inc. will join our Kansas City chapter for a celebration. Dr. Johnson-Speight will share the founding story of Mothers in Charge, Inc. and address homicide as a public health crisis in America.
Dr. Dorothy Johnson-Speight founded Mothers in Charge, Inc. in 2003 in Philadelphia. She is a highly regarded leader, advocate, speaker, guest radio/television commentator and a clarion voice against the war to end senseless acts of violent crime. Her work, though rooted in Philadelphia, has led to national appearances and presentations across the United States and abroad. Most recently, the Open Society Foundations named Dorothy as a member of the 2015 class of Soros Justice Fellows.
We are honored to celebrate 5 years as an organization with the woman who started it all. Following the tragic murder of her son Khaaliq Jabbar Johnson in 2001, Dr. Johnson-Speight inspired light and hope for many by founding Mothers in Charge, Inc. which now has twelve chapters affiliates established across the country.
Rosilyn Temple founded the Kansas City chapter of Mothers in Charge, Inc. in 2013. Originally formed as a program of Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, in July 2014, the Kansas City chapter received generous funding from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department to move into its own office space and expand the scope of its programs and services.
In November 2014, "KC Mothers in Charge" (KC MIC) appointed its inaugural Board of Directors and incorporated itself as nonprofit corporation in the State of Missouri. In May 2015, KC MIC received 501(c)(3) federal tax-exemption status.
Join us in celebrating our 5th anniversary and welcoming Dr. Johnson-Speight to Kansas City!
