KC Mothers in Charge to Host Annual 5K Run on April 23

Pee Wee's Run is back! The annual 5K run and walk to benefit KC Mothers in Charge will be live this year for the first time since 2019, kicking off National Crime Victims' Rights Week. (The event was held virtually for the past two years due to Covid restrictions.)

The run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 23, with check-in opening at 7 a.m. It begins and ends at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, 3700 Blue Parkway/Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, in Kansas City, Mo. All runners will receive a Pee Wee's Run t-shirt, and medals will be awarded for the top three finishes in the men’s and women’s categories.

Bryan Busby, chief meteorologist for KMBC 9 News, returns as race announcer. Estelle Brooks, managing partner of Fit 4 Us Is 4 You Health and Fitness, is this year's race director.

All proceeds from the event will benefit KC Mothers in Charge, which was founded by Rosilyn Temple 10 years ago after her son Antonio "Pee Wee" Thompson was found murdered in his apartment. Today, KC Mothers in Charge provides a wide variety of support and services for families who have also lost a loved one to homicide, and works to help reduce violent crime in our community through prevention, education and intervention.

KC Mothers in Charge Leading Community Clean Up Event

On Saturday, Oct. 2, 11 a.m.– 3 p.m., KC Mothers in Charge will host a neighborhood celebration to commemorate the conclusion of another Why Are We So Angry? community engagement project. The event will be held for the tenants of Charter Landing Apartments, 6009 Blue Hills Rd., Kansas City, Mo.

A hot dog lunch will be provided and vendors will be on site to assist Charter Landing’s residents with resume creation and job applications, and to provide additional information about available community resources. Representatives from the KCPD, Blue Hills Neighborhood Association, and Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas will be in attendance to provide guidance and resources to the tenants. Heart to Heart International will also be in attendance to provide tenants COVID-19 vaccinations.

Through the Why Are We So Angry? project, KC Mothers in Charge seeks to address the fear, anger, distrust and conflict that exists among families, neighbors and law enforcement where there has been a high incidence of gun-violence and homicide by focusing on anti-retaliation, conflict resolution, and encouraging neighborhood residents to call the police or TIPS Hotline.

KC Mothers in Charge’s community outreach and engagement work is funded, in part, by the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods grant program.

KC Mothers In Charge Offers Support To Gun Violence Survivors

July 2, 2021—KC Mothers in Charge has launched a new support group to benefit survivors of non-fatal shootings. “Survivors Will Heal” will meet every third Tuesday of the month, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., at the KC Mothers in Charge office, 3200 Wayne Ave., Kansas City, Mo., to discuss various topics related to surviving and thriving after experiencing gun violence.

“The violence in our city is everyone’s responsibility to address,” said Rosilyn Temple, Founder and Program Director of KC Mothers in Charge. “As we continue to uplift and support families that need help after a homicide has occurred, we plan to be just as impactful to those who have been wounded by gunfire and are working through their trauma. In fact, we hope that supporting survivors in this way will help play a part in decreasing Kansas City’s homicide rate.”

KC Mothers in Charge offers a different support group, “Hope and Healing for Survivors of Homicide,” for those who lost loved ones to homicide on the third Thursday of each month, as well. Free one-on-one counseling services are also available through the organization.

KC Mothers in Charge is a group of mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and a caring community committed to working to prevent others from experiencing the tragedy of homicide. Their mission is to reduce violent crime through prevention, education and intervention, and to guide and support the families of victims. For more information, visit www.kcmothersincharge.org.
